Introduction
Two footballers now hold nearly 1.2 billion Instagram follows. That’s more than every person living in Europe.
That’s the wild reality behind the top 10 most followed Instagram accounts in 2026. We checked the latest October 2026 numbers and compared them with January. We found some real surprises, including one big name who quietly slipped out of the top 10.
Key Highlights
- @instagram is the single biggest account, with about 686 million followers (Epidemic Sound, October 2026).
- Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed person, at 679.9 million (CreatorsJet, October 11, 2026).
- Ronaldo leads Lionel Messi by roughly 163 million followers (Visual Capitalist via Yahoo, 2026).
- You need about 291 million followers to crack the top 10 right now.
- Nike is the most followed brand, at about 291 million, sitting just outside the top 10.
- Justin Bieber dropped out of the top 10 in 2026.
- Instagram passed 3 billion monthly active users, which Meta confirmed in September 2025.
- India is Instagram’s largest market, with over 513 million users (DataReportal, 2026).
How We Ranked the Most Followed Instagram Accounts
We started with public follower counts that CreatorsJet tracked on October 11, 2026. Then we cross-checked them against Epidemic Sound’s October 2026 list and Wikipedia’s ranking, which draws on Social Blade. Where sources differed, we went with the most recent snapshot.
One thing to know: follower counts change daily. So treat every number here as a snapshot, not a fixed fact.
The Top 10 Most Followed Instagram Accounts in 2026
1. Instagram
The app’s own account still sits at the top. It posts creator spotlights, feature launches and trending Reels. Most new users get nudged to follow it, which explains a lot of its lead.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo is the most followed human on Earth. He plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia and posts a mix of training clips, family moments and sponsor content.
HypeAuditor estimated his Instagram earnings at $2.7M to $3.7M for June 2026 alone. At his current pace, he could pass @instagram itself.
3. Lionel Messi
Messi posts far less than Ronaldo, with about 1,500 posts in total versus Ronaldo’s 4,100. But his fans engage more. His average engagement rate of 1.5% is nearly double Ronaldo’s 0.83% (CreatorsJet, 2026).
4. Selena Gomez
Selena is the most followed woman on Instagram. She has also built a business empire with Rare Beauty, and her posts about mental health keep fans deeply loyal.

5. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Here’s the most impressive stat in this whole list. The Rock has a 3.07% engagement rate, the highest in the top 10 by a wide margin. He has posted over 8,500 times, and people still show up for his gym videos and motivational captions.
6. Kylie Jenner
Kylie and The Rock are separated by under a million followers. She uses Instagram as a shop window for Kylie Cosmetics, and her family posts regularly go viral.
7. Ariana Grande
Ariana keeps her grid small, with fewer than 600 posts. That rarity makes each post feel like an event, especially around film and music releases.
8. Kim Kardashian
Kim’s reach is huge, but her engagement rate is the lowest in the group, at 0.15%. That’s normal for very large, older accounts where many followers are passive.

9. Beyoncé
Beyoncé rarely writes captions and almost never explains herself. It works. Her posts feel like art drops rather than updates.
10. Khloé Kardashian
Khloé holds the last spot, but barely. Nike sits at about 291 million, so this position could flip any week.

January vs October 2026: Who Gained, Who Lost
This is where it gets interesting. Comparing Doofinder’s early-2026 counts with October data shows most stars actually lost followers this year. Ronaldo is the clear exception.
| Account | Early 2026 | October 2026 | Change |
| Cristiano Ronaldo | 667M | 679.9M | +12.9M |
| Selena Gomez | 417M | 402.8M | −14.2M |
| Kylie Jenner | 392M | 380.7M | −11.3M |
| Ariana Grande | 372M | 362.4M | −9.6M |
| Kim Kardashian | 354M | 343.8M | −10.2M |
| Beyoncé | 309M | 298.8M | −10.2M |
| Khloé Kardashian | 301M | 291.4M | −9.6M |
| Justin Bieber | 293M | ~286M | −7M (out of top 10) |
We couldn’t find an official explanation for the drop. Instagram does regularly remove fake and inactive accounts, which tends to hit older celebrity profiles hardest. So take the dip as a sign of cleaner numbers, not fading fame.
Pros and Cons of a Mega Following
| Pros | Cons |

| Multi-million-dollar earning power per post | Many followers are inactive or bots |
| Instant global attention for causes | One misstep spreads worldwide in hours |
| Stable audience that survives career dips | Heavy pressure to post constantly |
