1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA
MIT holds the number one spot again. It has now topped the QS rankings for well over a decade, and it remains the benchmark for engineering, computer science, AI, physics, mathematics and economics. It suits students who want research-heavy, innovation-driven study.
2. Imperial College London, UK (joint 2nd)
Imperial keeps second place. It is focused on science, engineering, medicine and business, and its London location gives students direct access to one of Europe’s biggest finance and technology hubs.

Stanford climbed one place to share second with Imperial. Its Silicon Valley location makes it a top choice for computer science, engineering, entrepreneurship and business.
4. University of Oxford, UK
Oxford holds 4th in QS but is ranked first overall by Times Higher Education (2026 edition). It is strong across humanities, law, medicine, computer science and social sciences, and uses a tutorial-based collegiate system.
5. Harvard University, USA
Harvard stays at 5th. It is especially strong in business, law, medicine, public policy, economics and life sciences, with one of the largest financial aid programmes in the world.
6. University of Cambridge, UK
Cambridge holds 6th. It is known for mathematics, natural sciences, engineering and medicine, and like Oxford it follows a collegiate model.
7. California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA
Caltech is the biggest climber in the top 10, moving up from 10th to 7th. It is a small, highly selective institution focused on physics, chemistry, engineering and space science.

ETH Zurich is continental Europe’s highest-ranked university. It is strongest in engineering, computer science, architecture and natural sciences, and Swiss public universities are known for relatively low tuition compared with the US and UK.

UCL rose one place to share 8th. It is a large, multidisciplinary London university with strengths in architecture, education, medicine, psychology and social sciences.
10. National University of Singapore (NUS)
NUS is Asia’s only representative in the top 10. It dropped from 8th to 10th this year, but it remains a strong, closer-to-home alternative for Indian students in computing, engineering, business and medicine.

Overall rankings don’t tell the full story. The Times Higher Education subject rankings show different leaders by field. MIT leads Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, and Social Sciences; Stanford leads Education and Law; Harvard leads Engineering and Life Sciences; and Caltech leads Physical Sciences. Oxford leads Medical and Health and Computer Science, while Cambridge tops Psychology.
